Job Description:
Reporting to the Director, PM/SM Chapter, Agile Excellence Domain, the Manager, PM/SM Chapter will provide leadership in people development and talent management along with technical excellence and innovation in project management practices across multiple types of delivery methodologies including waterfall, lean, agile and hybrid. This manager will have a demonstrated track record of working effectively within a shared services environment (matrix model), have practical hands-on experience leading a variety of initiatives spanning multiple stakeholders, teams and lines of businesses and is a strong people manager. The successful candidate will work closely with other managers and chapter leads to establish the standards for the chapter, evolve the practice and oversee a team of chapter members. The manager will focus on the growth and development of practitioners and ensure the alignment of the practice.
What will you do?
Team Management
- Create an environment for a highly motivated and engaged team of project professionals both agile and traditional
- Promote a learning environment where employees are encouraged to develop required skills, knowledge, and expertise
- Understand the skills of the resources, expertise, and areas where skills are lacking and put in appropriate remediation plans
- Support team members by proactively removing roadblocks for them leveraging their domain expertise
- Develop and execute a talent strategy that enables career progression and mobility, and professional development for Scrum Master practitioners
- Manage the hiring/onboarding, ongoing coaching, performance management, growth, and development, etc. of team members
- Manage and/or participate in the review of practitioners’ progression, performance, and compensation process. Act as champion for team members to put forth recommended salary increases and bonus suggestions
- Gather periodic performance feedback from stakeholders and squad members to ensure 360-degree input for team members
- Provide honest and direct feedback on evaluations and takes corrective action when required
- Ensures that domain objectives and plans are communicated to team members, along with how they contribute
- Hold regular team meetings to promote team building
- Hold regular one-on-one sessions with direct reports
Resource management
- Determine specific resource / skills requirements based on needs
- Forecast supply to demand and then map demand to resource fulfillment
- Assesses the most appropriate resources to fulfill demand (internal, external vendors, contractors, etc.)
- Provide support to Delivery teams and other stakeholders for issues with resources assigned to agile squads and hubs (e.g., performance/skill gaps)
- Track the execution and the reporting on resourcing and manage towards the budget for the chapters
- Anticipate future needs for critical skills / competencies and develop workforce plans to meet them
Practice Management
- Assess and review the overall practice for the chapter and drive best practice & continuous improvement as applicable
- Establish the direction of professional development for chapter members
- Ensure that all practice related material and information (e.g., best practices, industry information, methodologies) for the chapter are kept up-to-date and made available to team members
- Enable teams to be successful by providing necessary tools, coaching, change management and other support services
- Keep informed on market trends, business strategy and continuously develop your own expertise and knowledge
- Lead and facilitate community of practice for the chapter and ensure consistency and alignment in chapter management practices across DE Canada.
What will you need to succeed?
- Familiarity working across different project methodologies including waterfall, Lean, Agile, Scrum, Kanban
- Project Management Professional certification (PMP) or Certified Scrum Practitioner (CSP) ideal
- Delivery or software development background a plus
- 3+ years of experience in agile delivery
- 5+ years of experience in project management
- Experience working in an agile delivery and Kanban environment
- Experience encouraging team members to create a rewarding working environment in which they are driven and motivated to have a real impact within their respected product teams
- Experience creating an environment of learning and continuously improving your skills, development team skills, and your chapter

- Ability to relate well to others, including team members, peers, senior leaders, and clients

- Financial services experience, preferred

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance.
